Interview with James W. ("Jim") Hardin concerning his experiences as owner and operator of Jim Hardin's Paint and Wallcovering in Denton, Texas. Hardin discusses his family background, his employment with Esler Paint and Paper Company in Denison, his promotion to assistant manager and outside salesman, and the effects of the Depression in Denison. He also comments upon union activities in Denison, his military service in World War II, his experiences hanging wallcovering, his employment at Jack Hodge's paint store in Denton in 1953, and his purchase of the business from Hodges. Hardin shares his views on the organization of the KEM Institute to promote latex paint, he comments on the development of wallcovering, his business orientation toward homeowners, pricing changes in paint and wallcovering, being an outlet for Pittsburgh Paint products, and the growth of his business. He also talks about having family employees, describes his advertising, shares his views on the credit business, as well as the factors in developing a successful operation, his work in trade associations, and the advantages of family-owned business.
